With the Diwali – festival of lights around the corner, I have been experimenting with Air frying Indian snacks that everyone in my family loves. These savory spirals are a favorite in our house. Air frying them makes them healthier and the taste and texture is pretty close to the fried version. They are vegan, gluten free and low oil too. Added bonus is the protein in them because of the chickpea flour. Hope you try them!!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup Chickpea flour /besan

  • 3/4 cup Brown Rice Flour

  • 1 Large avocado mashed into a paste

  • 1+1 tbsp Olive or any other oil

  • 1 tsp Red chilli powder

  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder

  • 1 tbsp Ajwain or caraway seeds

  • 1 tbsp Sesame seeds

  • 2 pinch Asafetida

  • ½ tsp Baking soda

  • Per taste Salt

  • 1 tsp Lemon juice

Directions

  • Mix all the dry spices, salt, soda and flours and mix well.
  • Add the mashed avocado, oil and rub with your fingers. If using a stand mixer use paddle attachment to mix till u get breadcrumb like texture.
  • Next add the lemon juice and water and knead a soft dough.
  • You will need a cookie press or a Sev press like in the picture below to roll out the chakli.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 340 F.
  • In the basket/tray press the leaver to make chakli’s or spirals as shown in pictures.
  • Air fry for 7-8 mins and turn and then air fry again for 3-4 mins till golden color. Adjust the time since all air fryers distribute heat differently.
  • Cool completely on a cooling rack before storing them in a box.

Notes

  • You can substitute Avocado with 3 tbsp of Olive oil if allergic.
  • If you do not have the press, u can roll the dough out and cut rounds with a cookie cutter to make crackers. They taste equally good!!
  • You can also bake it at 340 F if you do not have a Air Fryer. Turn after 7 mins and cook till golden in color.
